Nadia and Yvette are sisters from Burundi, East Africa, and have lived in Shepparton since late 2020.

Nadia is a hard-working student currently completing her Year 12 studies. She is keen to create a better future for young people of colour with her commitment to learning and sharing her experiences to inform, guide and inspire others. Nadia hopes to pursue a career in biomedicine.

Yvette works as a school multicultural liaison officer and is also studying to become a nurse. Having seen how language and cultural barriers have a detrimental effect people’s health and well-being, she is determined to help people from all walks of life access accurate, timely, reliable information and services.

Nadia and Yvette have developed a podcast series exploring issues around friendship and peer pressure, trying to guide people to create the change they’d like to see in the world by forming strong, enriching friendships. These podcasts feature the sisters in conversation, sharing their own incredible experiences with personal struggles and offering insight into different types of friendships. Their hope is for this work to help others choose the right people to keep in their lives, empowering them to make their own decisions and make themselves the priority. For Nadia and Yvette, a better world is a world in which people know how to be a good friend, supporting and helping others instead of leading them astray.

Duniya Behter

Duniya Behter shifts the mainstream narrative about people with migrant and refugee backgrounds, from vulnerable to capable. Women and young people in Bendigo and Shepparton drew from their cultural roots, to build creative businesses and produce new digital creative works. The name, Duniya Behter, emerged from conversations with young Cultural Facilitators employed to work on this project and it speaks to the spirit and intention of MAV’s regional Victoria program. It is a reflection of some of the cultures in Bendigo and Shepparton where the project is based. Duniya means the world in Arabic, Hindi and it’s also found in the languages of Swahili, Hazaragi, Urdu and Persian, where it holds a similar meaning. Behter means better but working together to make better.

MAV has a profound commitment to arts and artists shaping the narratives that define who we are as a multicultural nation.
