YO CiTY – Elle Shimada ft. Co-Dreamers

Thu 16 Feb 2023

A kinetic succession of dance beats and abstract compositions. 嶋田会希–Elle Shimada is a violinist, producer, curator, DJ and multi-instrumentalist from Tokyo based in Melbourne. Fluidly fusing Tokyo’s futuristic underground scene, Melbourne mellow-jazz and influences from house and traditional music from around the globe, Shimada’s production and live sets are a kinetic succession of dance beats and abstract compositions. For Elle Shimada, the concept of home is ever-changing; it is the current which flows through her debut album, ‘Home ≠ Location’, released on Australian label The Jazz Diaries. The album contains lean, skittish skeletal beats upon which Shimada’s shimmering falsetto climbs. Lithe and loose, marrying incisive political commentary with deep introspection, the album folds in blends of house, bass and candied keys to showcase why Shimada is one of Australia’s most exciting talents. Elle Shimada’s live shows often feature multicultural and diverse artists of various mediums of arts including dance, fashion, and fine -arts. Her curation is a politically charged peaceful protest and emphasises exchanging knowledge and energy between the stage, dance floor and the community. Shimada utilises the uniting power of music to cultivate a dancefloor-activism that is inclusive, honest and raw creating progressive spaces beyond musicianship.

I am a ‘diaspora’ Latinx. Hola. It means everyone back home thinks I am basic

Wed 18 Jan 2023

"I am a ‘diaspora’ Latinx. Hola. It means everyone back home thinks I am basic" by Diego Ramírez is a live performance featuring a devil breaking a black piñata. Every time the devil hits the piñata, it responds with a noise that resembles a grunt, to make it seem like the object is suffering. Indeed, Ramírez corrupts his childhood memories breaking piñatas to resemble a sadistic scene, amplifying the darker connotations of this festive ritual. This performance began as a subtle image of pandemic (from the god Pan) that reflects on the nexus between North-South relationships, disease, and capitalism. However, Ramirez’ re-shifted this focus over time as a satire of diaspora art in alignment with his wider push and pull with identity politics, as evidenced in his writing. It also draws from his prior research on the evolving iconography of the devil in art history. The work is made in collaboration with Zamara Zamara on fabrication and Bonnie Cummings on sound. This project is funded by Multicultural Arts Victoria, as part of their Represent Commisions, scheduled for a 2023 presentation in Contact High curated by Anador Walsh. - - - - In line with Gertrude’s commitment to supporting curatorial practice and the presentation of ambitious projects and public outcomes, the month of January will again be dedicated to Contact High. Piloted in 2022, Contact High is a three-year partnership between Gertrude and Performance Review exploring the transference that occurs between performers and audiences in the gallery. Over the course of four weeks, four Naarm based artists will be given full access to Gertrude Glasshouse as a space in which to develop, rehearse and workshop new or existing performance works, before showing them to the public. On Wednesday 18 January, Sophie Gargan, Diego Ramírez and Kenneth Suico will present solo works. In the period Tuesday 24 January - Wednesday 25 January, Gabriella Imrichova will exhibit a collaborative work, the closing for which will be held on Wednesday 25 January.

The Durga Chronicles

Sat 3 Sep 2022 - Sun 4 Sep 2022

Two worlds simultaneously bleed: one where gendered violence is endemic and another where Goddesses destroy demons. Durga is the Goddess of protection, motherhood, and war. Also known as Mariamman and Korravai, Durga is a primordial being of complex multiplicities, recognised as the carrier of feminine strength. The Durga Chronicles evokes a metaverse in which the Goddess is ruler and destroyer of demons in one world, whilst in another, her kin are assaulted and murdered. At once a rite of collective mourning and a call to action, The Durga Chronicles remembers the stories of women who have been harmed and harnesses the force of Durga to provoke empowered resistance against gendered violence. Drawing on contemporary, classical Indian postmodern aesthetics, this rich work uses music, dance and stunning visuals – along with a world first; an exquisite, moving Carnatic choir of 12 women – to create a storytelling experience that operates on a visceral level. Internationally renowned dancer/choreographer/writer Priya Srinivasan’s works explore issues of social justice. Rooted in South Asian dance practice, her performances make women’s histories visible and have been presented in major festivals across the globe. Here she is joined by long-time collaborator Philipa Rothfield along with Uthra Vijay, an intergenerational Keerthana Women’s Choir, Hari Sivanesan, Govin Ruben and Marcus Salvagno to explore the ritual power of movement, song and storytelling as a means to incite change.

Conquest of the Garden

Thu 18 Aug 2022 - Sat 20 Aug 2022

Conquest of the Garden is an interdisciplinary and experimental new dance work by Melbourne based Choreographer Nebahat Erpolat. The work takes inspiration from Forough Farrakhzad, a feminist poet whose work in 1950’s Iran was seen as highly transgressive as a result of its criticism of the position of women in Iranian society. Nebahat Erpolat, Hellen Sky, Sahra Davoodi and Victoria Chui perform in this intercultural and intergenerational work, exploring the central ideas from Farrakhzad’s poem, subscribing these onto the moving body, uncovering the transgressive power of poetry and dance to underpin connection across cultures. Farrakhzad’s poetry presents urgent questions about women’s roles in our society and centers women’s subjective voices as architects of their own lived experience. The melding of artistic forms through poetry, dance and sound enable experimentation with own voices, and a powerful reclamation of female identity to explore the multiplicities and complexities of Middle Eastern women’s identity.

Off The Grid s a new music mentoring program designed by Melbourne based creative, Titan Debirioun, with Multicultural Arts Victoria, to address the massive gaps in infrastructure and accessibility in regards to music production and recording spaces for young people in Melbourne’s outer west Wyndham region. The program will deliver 6 free quality recording sessions and music composition workshops for emerging artists, guided by experienced Melbourne producer and engineer, Simba Andrews and creative mentors, Pookie, Rockstar Bola and Devarn Kiir. Participants will have an opportunity to upskill themselves in a culturally safe environment that also serves as a drop in centre for local creatives. All aspiring young artists in Melbourne’s outer west, are invited to drop in, record music, work on their writing ability or just relax and network with other creatives from their local area. Project coordinator, Titan Debirioun says, “We need more spaces in the outer West where kids can be creative and actually get the assistance they need to grow as artists. Everyone isn’t interested in the same things, and if we want to really help kids set up their futures, we have to build all the necessary spaces and pathways to assist them.” The project has been developed and produced as part of MAV’s Emerge Cultural Leadership program which supports the vision and aspirations of artists from newly arrived and emerging communities around Victoria.

Yenbenal Mawa Murrangurang Ancestors Blood Always | An exhibition by Coree Thorpe

Sat 27 Jul 2019 - Sun 29 Sep 2019

Yenbenal Mawa Murrangurang ancestors blood always, captures the history and living stories of Yorta Yorta country and people as passed on through family and country. This exhibition by Yorta Yorta artist, Coree Thorpe, is inspired by his maternal grandparents and family stories and memories associated with living in a significantly historical time and place in Yorta Yorta history. The 4th February 2019 marked the 80th Anniversary of the Cummeragunja Walk-Off where many Aboriginal families left the mission to live in an area fondly known as the Mooroopna Flats, next to the Kaiela (Goulburn River) and Midland Highway between Mooroopna and Shepparton in Victoria. This exhibition will be showcased at The Connection, Shepparton – Home of Yurri Catering which is closely located and interconnected with the Mooroopna Flats and Yorta Yorta history. Identity, culture, family and sharing connection to country are at the heart of this project. About Coree Thorpe: Coree Thorpe is a Gunnai, Yorta Yorta and Gunditjmara emerging artist. Growing up surrounded by art and activism, Coree has always had a passion for creativity, for standing strong in who you are and for ensuring that community and family are at the heart of everything. Coree has been an integral member of the Koorie Youth Will Shake Spears Melbourne-based dance group for over 20 years, but it was in the last 3 years that he has picked up a paintbrush again. In 2017, he entered a piece into the Koorie Art Show at the Koorie Heritage Trust, where he was encouraged to continue painting after winning the Lend Lease Reconciliation Award, for his portrait of his cousin Adam Briggs. Coree currently works for Dardi Munwurro (Strong Spirit), an Aboriginal organisation focused on breaking the cycle of family violence and intergenerational trauma in Aboriginal families and communities. Yenbenal Mawa Murrangurang will be Coree’s first solo exhibition.
