In Samoa, food is still cooked the way it has been for millenia, in a ground oven of hot stones called an umu. This special event will be a rare opportunity to be immersed in flavours, stories and culture of the Islands with a traditional umu experience.

From watching the stones being laid and the fire being lit, to learning how to weave a plate the Island way and gathering around to hear Aunty Aisa talk about Fa’a Samoa (the Island way), the day will finish with a feast of delicious, traditional Island umu dishes.

A Taste of the Umu has been developed by local Samoan woman Leaisa Pele in collaboration with artist Jamie Lewis and is one of a series of participatory arts experiences being offered as part of the Shepparton Culture Kitchen project.

And stay tuned for more Shepparton Culture Kitchen events happening in May!

Shepparton Culture Kitchen is a significant arts initiative centring the voices and lived experiences of diverse local women, to build a future in which our communities are connected through empowering, healthy and sustainable food cultures. With new discourse around health equity** Shepparton Culture Kitchen** is radically reimagining how systemic health issues can be addressed from a community self-determined approach.
