With a series of new textile artworks, the artists reconnect to the experiential tactility of working directly with yarn and recyclable materials, bringing visitors closer to the intimate, slow-time work of the hand.
The exhibition is curated by Yunuen Perez. The artists are Carla Risco, Carmen Novoa, Isabel Avendano-Hazbun, Paula doPrado, Viviana Arango and Yunuen Perez.
Yarn for Hands is supported by MAV and City of Melbourne Art Grants Program.
Curator and artist
Yunuen Perez, curator and artist of Yarn for Hands, conceived the idea of developing a new group exhibition that connects diaspora artists from her community, whose countries have been affected by fashion waste, who have a solid connection to cultural textile practice and work with recycle and repurposed materials.
Dye artist
Emerging artist Viviana Arango is exploring her dual experience as a Colombian woman and mother of two toddlers living in Dja Dja Wurrung country by hand-dying discarded fabric with avocado shells, used coffee grounds and eucalyptus leaves, melding natural elements from her native Colombia and her home in Maldon, Victoria.
Screen printing artist
Carla Risco is a Chilean-born, Melbourne-based artist working inscreen printing.
