Expression of Interest: Mentorship in Exhibition Operations for First Nations Artists

Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Bendigo Emerge Cultural Hub will fund a part time 4 month First Nations Identified Mentorship position for an Indigenous artist to learn exhibition operations.

The Mentee will be employed by Multicultural Arts Victoria and be based in the Dudley House co working Hub. They will be supervised by Forest Keegel and the NAIDOC exhibition Curator Janet Bromley.

During the mentorship the candidate will work on all aspects of the exhibition including, but not limited to:

  • Contacting Artists
  • Processing Artist applications and keeping a database of artists
  • Visiting various groups with the Curator such as the Bendigo And District Aboriginal Cooperative Women’s Group
  • Assisting with writing press releases
  • Distributing flyers
  • Promoting the exhibition through various channels including social media
  • Correspondence with stakeholders and handling general enquiries
  • Maintaining a contacts database and mailing list
  • Assisting with hanging the work
  • Assisting the photographer and putting images of artists work on USB’s to give to them
  • Invigilating the exhibition and keeping records of attendance
  • Handling enquiries about sales and maintaining exhibition space
  • Writing a report about the exhibition
  • Developing an operations manual which outlines all processes and procedures required to hold the exhibition on an annual basis.
  • Applying for funding for 2019 NAIDOC exhibition for an Exhibition Coordinator and Curator
  • Assisting Curator with floor talks

The position hours vary in the lead up to the exhibition but there is a total of 200 hours from May until the end of August and the hourly rate is $20 per hour.

Stage 1 – Learning the ropes
10 hours per week (spread over 2 or 3 days) in the month of May and the first 2 weeks of June.
Total 58 hours

Stage  2 – Preparing the Exhibition
From 11th June – 5th July 15 hours per week
Total 60 hours

Stage 3 – Exhibition
During the exhibition, the position is 6 days of 6 hours per week 10.30-4.30pm from Friday 6th July – Saturday 15th July Total 42 hours

Stage 4 – Reporting and applying for funds for 2019During the 4 weeks after the exhibition of 10 hours per week
Total 40 hours

We are looking for candidates who can commit to the hours outlined above, are interested in learning how to do exhibition operations and have a passion and interest in the Visual Arts. No formal qualifications are required.
