The current situation in Australia and internationally shows the importance of committing to racial justice, as a collective action in which each of us is implicated. Racism is with us, and it is up to all of us to do our part to reject the attitudes, behaviours and systems that uphold it. MAV stands in solidarity with communities who are the survivors of racism, and in particular want to acknowledge the experiences of First Nations people and their long term struggle for justice and equity. This must be the priority, if we are to truly embody the values of a pluralistic society.
Many people are asking what can they do at this time to express their support. As a cultural organisation, we encourage you to listen to the voices of creatives of colour. Engage with their works, which offer deep contemplation of their lived realities, both past and present. If you are in a position to give, here are some campaigns you can contribute to.
If you or anyone you know is experiencing COVID-19-fuelled racism, we encourage you to make a complaint at the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. You may also log your experience with racism here.
MAV continues to provide assistance to diverse creatives who may be experiencing hardship or seeking support to access newly created funds for artists, during these challenging times. We have a number of projects in development with an anti-racism focus and invite anyone with an interest in participating to get in touch.
In solidarity,
The MAV Team
