Light with Hope — Harmonious by Jenny Zhe Chang
2021 - 2022
Site-specific public installation
The lanterns depicted in Light with Hope Harmonious are made of bamboo steamers and safety mesh, these 278 lanterns hung on 17 trees. Depicting miner’s lamps, they offer solace for those in pursuit of a better life. Tied to ‘dim sum’ bamboo steamers symbolise sharing whilst safety mesh conveys protection.
Each lantern contains a mirror reflecting our essence. Inscribed with the word ‘Harmonious’ in diverse languages, the installation championed unity, coexisting with the land and illuminating hope.
This project was produced by Testing Grounds and sponsored by the City of Melbourne. The full installation of Light with Hope appeared by the Yarra River at Birrarung Marr between 4 May 2022 – 3 July 2022 as part of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA)’s program Who’s Afraid Of Public Space.
“This artwork intimates that all of us can share light and hope in any situation.” - Jenny Zhe Chang
Light with Hope is currently featured as a large-scale photograph in the Metro Tunnel Creative Program, installed at the construction-site hoarding at Anzac Station.
